My Story
All this starts from an experience
After suddenly and unexpectedly losing my beautiful boy Alex, I found myself in great emotional and mental pain. A pain that no one should have to experience. I absolutely could not find relief from this gut wrenching pain. After days I forced myself to go see my horse Moki. I walked up to him, he stood and stared at me for a few minutes. With tears streaming down my cheeks, his eyes never left mine as he slowly walked towards me. I was sobbing as I felt he could feel my pain. Moki came to me, lifted my arms with his head as to put my arms around his neck. He took his giant head and neck wrapped it around me….my first horse hug. I cried for what seemed like hours and he stood silently with me. Moki saved my life that day….I still cry with him 2.5 years later.
As my animals helped to heal me with their unconditional love, I realized not everyone is blessed to have these amazing animals. That is why we started Alex’s Safe Place. We want to share our beautiful animals with those who are grieving, suffering from trauma, stress or mental and emotional pain. We will pair people with animals. The animals will pick their person they instinctively know who needs them.
“How do we change the world?
One random act of kindness at a time.”
Our Journey
Milestones
2020
September 2020 my beautiful boy Alex suddenly, unexpectedly passed away.
2021
Shattered and broken I found comfort with my horse Moki.
My heart still in great pain from my loss, I knew I had to do more. Everywhere I looked pictures of horses that had been sold to kill buyers headed to slaughter popped up. I knew I had to help these horses.
At the same time, I was meeting moms, dads, siblings, spouses etc. that were suffering their own loss.
I suddenly realized my life’s calling.
2022
The journey began of Alex’s Safe Place!
Our Values
This is why we do this
My son Alex struggled with anxiety and self-doubt. Looking at this 6 foot handsome muscular man, who would have known, Alex masked it with his wit and kind giving heart, inside he felt alone and anxious. When the world got to be too much he would hide behind drugs and alcohol. This was not a relief but a temporary escape.
As his mom, I couldn’t love him enough to take his pain away, which broke my heart. When our dog Wynonna had puppies, I watched Alex he was drawn to one particular puppy that he named Dorian. Dorian could and did love Alex like no other. Dorian loved unconditionally.
No judgements. No questions. No expectations. Just 100% unconditional love.
As their relationship grew, Alex’s anxiety lessened as his confidence grew. It reconfirmed to me how powerful animals are and how much we humans need them. We want to share this type of love with others who are in need.
